1. The One-Year Filing Deadline
You must file your asylum application within one year of your last entry into the United States. Missing this deadline can result in denial unless you qualify for a narrow exception (changed circumstances or extraordinary circumstances).
If you are close to or past the one-year deadline, file as quickly as possible and document the reason for the delay in detail.
2. Form I-589 and the LA Asylum Office
The asylum application is Form I-589. It can be filed affirmatively with USCIS (if you are not in removal proceedings) or defensively with the immigration court (if you are in proceedings). The Los Angeles Asylum Office is at 1585 S Manchester Ave, Anaheim, despite the name.
There is currently no filing fee for I-589. Filing also lets you apply for a work permit 150 days after the application is pending.
